emmerdale

The extract begins with a edited transition where the shot is dissolved to show a low angle shot of a pig pen in which we can see a female farmer feeding her pigs.The female is dressed in a casual attire of a long kahki trench coat a farmers cap and wellington boots.Her costume gives connotations of a working class lady which is further supported by the fact she is in a pig pen doing manual labour.The camera is looking up to show how she is trying to do well for herself and her family and how she is focussed on her work. Diagetic sound of her walking across the mud and the food clinking in the bucket shows the natural sounds that come when living in the yorkshire moors.The use of this sound shows social realism in a conventional soap drama as it links to real life farms in which people would be exposed to these noises.In this section the regional identity of yorkshire people is represented as being hardworking and speaking in a loud voice.

The use of a mid-shot shows the female character sorting out letters and mail. This adds a realistic view to her life and highlights that this is her house, the use of diegetic sound also enhances the realism of a middle-class life as we hear her husband making the tea and her rustling the letters, these sounds all appear stereotypical of the everyday life of a middle class family. The mise-en-scene and sound is present so the audience can relate to this atmosphere and also gives us an insight into the social class of the programmes intended audience.

Parallel synchronous sound is used in the extract to make it more realistic,the action of walking causes the footprints coming down the corridor which is a natural sound present in the hospital.
The Irish man in this extract is represented as a conventional dominant male this can be seen through many aspects shown in the clip;
  • he is wearing a blazer and smart trousers with a blue shirt-this shows he is quite a smart man of a higher social class and background.this is supported through the language he uses and how he behaves and acts towards other characters.
  • the camera gives low angle shots looking up to him presenting him as a high authority making an important point to the other characters.
  • he supports the female characters in this extract and goes against other dominant males and sticks up for the ladies.when he is with the females he shows a softer calmer side which is quite stereotypical of men treating ladies nicer however this also contrasts with the norm in society as men are seen as being controlling of woman in the home and other places.
  • the camera only shows mid shots and close ups of the male and does not go below the midst ,this is because he is represented as a positive character which is shown through the camera angles.

The doctor in this extract is represented as a quite a fragile 'weak' man.This can be shown through the conversation he has with the Irish man.However when he talks to females he matches the stereotype that men dominate over woman and try to control them when confronting them.
  • extreme close up shots are used to focus attention on his feelings and reactions to his ex-girlfriend who is trying to rebel against him.
  • The doctor is wearing a pink nurses robe which shows his position as a doctor in the extract.
  • later in the extract the doctor apologizes to the female patient who he caused harm to during a procedure.The camera looks down on the doctor to show how he feeling bad and trying to get sympathyfrom the audience
